Does AKC accept/register white Shepherds?
That being said, it is not a separate breed but a variation of GSD. The only thing which white GSDs are NOT allowed in the AKC Conformation ring.
No… and yes… sort of.
White and other dilute colors have been disqualifications for the German Shepherd Dog since before the first AKC breed standard. That said, the AKC has also always refused to deny registration for a dog merely because of color (or anything else) so long as it is purebred. So there have always been German Shepherd Dogs who happened to be white that were AKC registered, they would simply be disqualified if they tried to show in conformation.
Now, some European breeders took white Shepherd Dogs and started breeding them with the intention not of a GSD of a different color, but a different, related breed. These breeders call their new breed the White Swiss Shepherd since most of them were based in or near Switzerland.
The AKC does not yet fully recognize the White Swiss Shepherd, but they are recognized by the FCI (the international kennel club organization). If a breed club were to form in the US and apply for recognition, there is no reason they *couldn’t* be recognized along with any other breed.
So… the AKC does not withhold registration from GSDs that happen to be white, but they do not them in the GSD conformation ring.
